Abstract

Background: Omega-3 may cause immunity impairment especially in cellular immunity responses, while echinacea may increase the response. Objective: The purpose of this study was to see the effects of Echinacea administration by measuring the concentration of NO (Nitric Oxide) produced by macrophage on BALB/C mice with Omega-3 diet. Method and Subject: This study was a laboratory experimental study using the Post Test Only Control Group Design. 24 male BALB/C mice were divided into four groups randomly. The K Group were given standard diet, the O Group were given Omega -3 fish oil diet, the E Group were given echinacea extract, and the OE Group were given combination of Omega -3 fish oil diet and echinacea extract. On the 28th day, the samples were injected intravenously with Listeria Monocytogenes. The difference among the four groups were analyzed with One Way ANOVA and the difference between groups was analyzed further by Post Hoc Test Bonferron. The analysis were significant with the value p<0,05. Result: There were significant differences in concentration of macrophage NO production among the experimental groups (p<0,05). The lowest concentration of NO production was found in the O group and it defined significant differences compared to the other groups. The OE Group also revealed significant differences with other groups. Conclusion: There were significant differences in concentration of macrophage NO for the OE group despite the O group (p=0,001). The concentration of NO macrophage production on the O group was less than the OE group. Key Words: Echinacea, Omega-3, Nitric Oxide.
