PENGARUH PEMBERIAN EKSTRAK DAUN SALAM (Eugenia polyantha) TERHADAP KADAR KOLESTEROL TOTAL SERUM TIKUS JANTAN GALUR WISTAR HIPERLIPIDEMIA

Abstract

Background : Eugenia polyantha, one of Indonesian medicine plants, often used as traditional medicine. It contains several active regiments considered to be able to lower cholesterol levels in blood. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of graded dose of Eugenia polyantha extract on serum total cholesterol level in male hyperlipidemic Wistar. Methods : An experimental study using Pre and Post Randomized Controlled Group Design was carried out to hyperlipidemic male Wistar rats. Sample consisted of 28 male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. They were one control group, receiving only a standard diet and three treatment groups, given extract from 0.18 gram, 0.36 gram, and 0.72 gram Eugenia polyantha per day for 15 days. Serum total cholesterol level was determined by using CHOD-PAP method. The data were processed by using Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman test. Results : The administration of three dosages of Eugenia polyantha extract was significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol level,(p=0.001). The maximal dose was the extract obtained from 0.72 gram Eugenia polyantha. There was a correlation betwen dosage and the decreased of serum total cholesterol level (p=0,000, r=-0,907). Conclusion : The administration of extract obtained from 0.18 gram, 0.36 gram, and 0.72 gram Eugenia polyantha for 15 days significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol level in hyperlipidemic male Wistar rats, with the maximal dose was extract from 0,72 gram Eugenia polyantha.The higher extract dosage, the lower serum total cholesterol level.
