Abstract
Background : Senggugu (Clerondendron serratum Spreng) is known in gurah practice because of it’s mucolytic effect. Besides that, according to earlier research Senggugu can also be used as antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic. Clerodendron serratum Spreng will be absorbed, distributed, metabolized and excreted in vivo. Kidney is the main excretion organ; this is why it is often damaged by toxin substances. The purpose of this research is to determine the changes in Balb/c mice’s kidney histological appearance after the administration of Clerodendron serratum Spreng root bark extract gradually for 14 days. Method : This was a experimental study using the post test only group design. The samples were 24 Balb/c mice with specific criteria and were divided into 4 groups ramdomly, 6 mice each. The control group (K) received no Clerodendron serratum Spreng, while the experimental group P1, P2, and P3 were given the Clerodendron serratum Spreng extract in gradual dose respectively 1; 1,5; 2 g/kg weight of mice in 14 days. Results : There were proximal tubule damage due to edema in almost every group, extend from mild to severe. The outcome of Kruskal-Wallis Test showed significant differences among all groups (p=0,001). The outcome of Mann-Whitney test between K-P1 group were (p=0.019), between K-P2 group were (p=0,019), between K-P3 group were (p=0,04), between P1-P2 group were (p=0,046), between P1-P3 group were (p=0,020) and between P2-P3 group were (p=0,020). Conclusion : There were difference in Balb/c mice’s kidney histological appearance between the administration and absence of Clerodendron serratum Spreng extract, where the proximal tubules were seen to be destructed due to edema in accordance with the increasing doses.. Keywords : Clerodendron serratum Spreng, Balb/c mice, proximal tubule
