Abstract

Background : Ethanol extract from Clerodendron serratum L. Spreng roots bark known as antinociceptive, antiinflamatory, and antipyretic effect. Clerodendron serratum root bark contains active substance such as phenolic glycoside, mannitol, and sitosterol. Liver was functioned as toxic substance detoxication and the important excretion beside kidney. The objective of this study was to show the effect of Clerodendron serratum root bark ethanol extract given in single dose on the liver histopathological appearance of Balb/C mice. Method : An experimental study with the post-test only control group design was carried out on experiment animal Balb/C mice, consisted of 24 male mice, divided into 4 groups. K was control group without treatment with ethanol extract from Clerodendron serratum root bark, whereas P1 was group treated with ethanol extract from Clerodendron serratum root bark 1 gr/kgBB per oral in single dose, P2 was given 1,5gr/kgBB per oral in single dose, and P3 was given 2 gr/kgBB per oral in single dose. Result : The administering of ethanol extract from Clerodendron serratum root bark altered the histopathological appearance of Balb/C mice liver which were degeneration, carioreksis, cariolysis, and picnotic. On statistical test of knodell score there were significant differences between each groups with control and between each group to another. Conclusion : There were differences of liver histopathological appearance of Balb/C mice in treated group were given ethanol extract from Clerodendron serratum root bark compare with control group. At giving ethanol extract from Clerodendron serratum root bark in high dose noted increase of level damage hepatocytes of Balb/C mice. Keyword : acute effect, liver histopathological appearance, Clerodendron serratum
