Abstract

Background : Candidiasis is the most frequent encountered opportunistic fungal infection. Candida albicans is the major cause of candidiasis. Nigella sativa consist of thymoquinone and thymohydroquinone which were shown to have antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans. Ketoconazole inhibits hepatic cytochrome P450 isozymes so that ergosterol synthesis is blocked and fungal cell membrane damage is occurred. The aim of the study is to compare the effectiveness of 100% Nigella sativa infusion with 2% ketoconazole in vitro to the growth of Candida albicans. Method : The study is a laboratory experimental design. The samples consist of 16 Candida albicans isolates clinical isolates which is isolated from cervical swab and identified by germ tube test. The colonies of Candida albicans were diluted in steril 0,9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0,5 Mc Farland standard. As many as 0,1 cc of solution was cultivated on the SDA media supplemented with 100% Nigella sativa infusion and SDA media supplemented with 2% ketoconazole, and then the media were incubated at 370 C for 2 days. . The antimicrobial activity is determined by the growth of Candida albicans. Result : Research was resulted that 100% Nigella sativa infusion can not inhibit the growth of Candida albicans. Conclusion : 100% Nigella sativa infusion is not effective in inhibitting the growth of Candida albicans in vitro. Keyword : Candida albicans, Nigella sativa, ketoconazole
