Abstract
Background : Momordica charantia, one of Indonesian medicine plant, often used in society as traditional medicine. Ones of Momordica charantia’s benefits, which haven’t much been explored is antihiperlipidemic. Momordica charantia contains several active regiments like nicotinic acid considered to be able to lower cholesterol levels in blood, so may prevent hiperlipidemic condition. Thus, a study to determine the effect of stratified dose of Momordica charantia juice on total cholesterol serum level in hyperlipidemic rats is done. Methods : An experimental study using Pre and Post Randomized Controlled Group Design was carried out to already made hyperlipidemic Wistar rats. Sample consist of 28 male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. They are one control group, which receive standard diet only, and three treatment group, which given diet containing 2 ml per day for treatment I, 4 ml for treatment II, and 6 ml for treatment III per day for 15 days. The analysis of total cholesterol serum level was determined using CHOD-PAP method. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and One Way Anova. The degree of significant was 5 %. Results : The administration of third dosage of Momordica charantia juice in the treatment groups causes the declining rise of total cholesterol serum level which significantly (p=0.000) to all dosages compared to control. Conclusion : The administration of 2 ml, 4 ml, and 6 ml per day of Momordica charantia juice for 15 days could decrease the total cholesterol serum level in hyperlipidemic rats significantly, with the maximal dose is 6 ml per day.
