Abstract

Background: Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is one of natural substances that has sedative effect and being use for solving insomnia as traditional medicine nowdays. Valerian contains metal cadmium that already known as toxic agent on lung. This study is aiming to know the effect of valerian on lung microscopic appearance of wistar rat. Methods: This study is an experimental with design Post Test - Only Control Group Design. 20 rats divided into 4 groups randomly. 1 control group (K) that had been given standard food, and 3 treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) that had been given valerian in 9 mg/kg BB, 18 mg/kg BB, and 36 mg/kg BB dosages via gastric sonde. Treatment was given for 3 months. The termination was done on the last day, the lung was taken to be observed the microscopic appearance. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and continued by Mann-Whitney test. Result: The study showed that between control group (K) and treatment group (P1, P2, P3) there is microscopic appearance such as deskuamasi, erotion, ulceration. Statistic test on lung microscopic showed that between control group (K) and treatment group (P1, P2, P3) with p<0,05, but between P1 and P2 with p>0,05. Conclusion: The treatment of valerian extract showed there is an effectt on lung microscopic appearance of wistar rat. Keywords: Valerian, lung’s microscopic appearance
