Abstract

Background: S. aureus is human normal flora; particularly is found in the anterior nares. However, S. aureus can cause infection in the certain conditions, especially because of its pathogenicity and resistance. Nasal carriage play an important rule in the mechanism of infection and antimicrobial resistance. This mechanism is influenced by multifactors; one of them is demographic factor, including age, sex, and ethnic. Methods: This study used a cross sectional design and survey approach. The number of the sample was 308 students from 3rd – 5th year of 3 Elementary Schools in Semarang city; i.e SD Kristen II YSKI, SDN Pandean Lamper, and SDN Manyaran. Nasal speciments were collected by swabbing and demography data were collected by interviewing. Standart procedurals were conducted to identify the colonization and antimicrobial resistance at laboratory. The data was analyzed with bivariate analysis (Chi-square test / Fischer exact test), prevalence ratio, and multivariate analysis (logistic regression), using SPPS 16. for Windows Result: The result of this research was that age had an influence to the S. aureus colonization and antimicrobial resistance while the other variables did not. Multivariate analysis showed that p value for age variable toward S.aureus colonization was 0,002 (RP = 1,70; IK 95% = 1,194 – 2,430) and p value for age variable toward S.aureus antimicrobial resistance was 0,001 (RP = 9,29; IK 95% = 1,360 – 63,443). Age variable was a risk factor in this research. Conclusion: Age factor became a risk factor toward S.aureus colonization and antimicrobial resistance in Elementary School students. Keywords: S. aureus, colonization, antimicrobial resistance, demography factor
