Abstract

Background: Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) contains several active ingredients which predicted usefull to lowering blood cholesterol level. Overall, it predicted that the hypocholesterolemic effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa caused by its pectin, β-sitosterol, and anthocyanin but the total cholesterol lowering effect mainly affected pectin and anthocyanin. This research objective was to evaluate the effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion with stepped dose to serum total cholesterol level in hypercholesterolemic Sprague-dawley rat. Method: This is an experimental research with Pre and Post Randomized Controlled Group Design. Samples consist of 24 male Sprague-dawley rat which devided into 4 groups, 1 control group with standart diet, and 3 treatment groups given stmdart diet and Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion with doses of 125, 250, and 500mg/BW/day for 6 weeks. The data was analyzed with paired t test and one way ANOVA. Result: Post hoc analysis show significant difference on every compared groups with p=0,000 for all groups except between P2 and P3 with p=0,001. Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion with dose 125 mg/kgBW/day lowering total cholesterol level by 23,89%, dose 250 mg/kgBW/day by 40,30%, and dose 500 mg/kgBW/day by 46,58%. Conclusion: The study conclude that the administration of Rosella dry calyx infusion able to lowering the total cholesterol serum level significantly. . This study also showed that the total serum cholesterol level decreased linearly along with the increasing dose of Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion. Keyword: serum total cholesterol level, Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion
