Abstract

Background: Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L) is herbal that has hepatoprotector and diuretic effect that has been used for long to overcome the hepatitis and urolithiasis. Meniran is excreted by the kidney. This study is aiming to know whether any effect of Meniran treatment to macroscopic and microscopic appearance in Balb/c mice’s kidney. Method: This experimental Post Test-Controlled Only Group Design study was using 25 male BAlb/c mices that were divided into 5 groups, one control group (K) that had been given standard food, and four treatment groups (P1, P2, P3, P4) that had been given Meniran treatment in 5 mg/kg BW, 50 mg/kg BW, 500 mg/kg BW, and 2000 mg/kg BW dosages via gastric sonde once, and being observed for a week. On 8th day, those mices were terminated to be measured the kidney’s volume and to observed the histopatological appearance. Macroscopic data was analyzed by Kruskall-Wallis test, and the microscopic data was analyzed by oneway-Anova test and continued by Post-Hoc test. Result: There was no significant difference in kidney’s macroscopic appearance among groups (p=0.087), whereas there was significant difference in kidney’s microscopic appearance, there were: K-P3 (p=0.026), K-P4, P1-P4, P2-P4 (p=0.000), P1-P3 (p=0.009), and P3-P4 (p=0.002). Conclusion: Acute treatment of Meniran herbal’s extract has not make significant difference on the macroscopic appearance of kidney between control and treatment group and within each treatment group, but the treatment makes a significant difference on the microscopic appearance of kidney between control and treatment group and within each group. Keywords: Meniran, kidney’s macroscopic appearance, kidney’s microscopic appearance.
