HUBUNGAN ANTARA INDEKS MASA TUBUH (IMT) DENGAN DERAJAT OSTEOARTRITIS LUTUT MENURUT KELLGREN DAN LAWRENCE

Abstract

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disease in Indonesia. The radiograph of knee osteoarthritis shows changes of knee joint characterized as grade 0 to 4 based on Kellgren and Lawrence grading system. These changes are influenced by risk factors including obesity. This study is aimed at finding association between obesity as a risk factor represented by Body Mass Index (BMI) with Kellgren and Lawrence grading system for knee osteoarthritis. Methods: This was a cross sectional study, using 28 knee osteoarthritis patients fulfilled the criteria, who came to Rheumatic Poly and Installation of Medical Rehabilitation of Dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang during March to April 2010 as sample. The BMI and the grade of knee osteoarthritis of the patients were described in table and chart and analyzed with Chi square test (α = 0.05, 95% CI, and power = 80%) using SPSS for Windows 15.0. Result: Chi square test for BMI and grade of unilateral knee osteoarthritis and for BMI and grade of bilateral knee osteoarthritis yield p = 1.000. Conclusion: There is no significant association between Body Mass Index (BMI) with Kellgren and Lawrence grading system for knee osteoarthritis. Obesity is a risk factor of the occurrence of knee osteoarthritis, but it is not the only factor that determines the grade of knee osteoarthritis. There are many other risk factors that contribute to the grade of knee osteoarthritis. Keywords: BMI, grade of knee osteoarthritis, Kellgren and Lawrence
