Abstract
Background : Cigarette smoke is one of many free radicals giving an unwanted effect on spermatozoa. Cigarette smoke produces an oxidative stress influencing the living perpetuity of spermatozoa. This research has the objective of finding out the effect of Cyclea barbata L. Miers application on the sperm exposed to cigarette smoke. Method: This research uses the post test only control group method on 35 BALB/c strain male mice, divided into 5 groups. The Control Group(-) / K- with a standard diet without the application of Cyclea barbata L.Miers and cigarette smoke;Control Group (=) / K+ is given with a standard diet and cigarette smoke exposition but without application of Cyclea barbata L.Miers; Treatment 1 (T1),Treatment 2 (T2),and Treatment 3 (T3) group are given with a standard diet plus cigarette smoke exposition and applied with stepped dosages of Cyclea barbata L.Miers daily ,which are 3.75 g/l, 7 g/l,and 15 g/l,for three weeks. The Control – and Control + are used as comparisons to the treatment group, in order to find out of comparisons of spermatozoa morphology abnormality in each group. Then, the mice are terminated to collect their spermatozoa and the percentage of morphology abnormality is counted. Result: The positive control group experiences the highest alteration of spermatozoa morphology abnormality (26.92); meanwhile, for the negative control group,It is the group with the lowest amount of morphology abnormality (8,68). Using the Saphiro-Wilk test, the data are normally distributed; however,it is obtained using the Levene homogeneity test (p<0.005). As a result,it is continued with the Kruskal Wallis test followed by the Man-Whitney test resulted in the significant differences in all groups except T2 and T3. Conclusion: the application of Cyclea barbata L.Miers leaf extract to the male BALB/c mice exposed to the cigarette smoke can restore their spermatozoa morphology abnormality.
