Abstract
Background: High cLDL level is one important risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) is a common consumed herbal beverage. There are increasing evidence which strengthen the verification of hypolipidemic effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa. This study objective is to observe cLDL lowering effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion with stepped dose in hypercholesterolemic rat. Method: The study design is Pre and Post Randomized Controlled Group Design using 8 weeks old male Sprague-dawley rats. Total of 24 samples are divided into 4 groups (K, P1, P2, P3). All samples has been given high fat diet until hypercholesterolemic then given Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion with dose 125mg/kgBW/day for P1, 250mg/kgBW/day for P2, 500mg/kgBW/day for P3, and standart diet for control group. The cLDL level analyzed using Friedewald formula. The data analyzed with One way ANOVA and Paired t test. Result: The comparison between cLDL level before and after treatment showed significant result with p=0,000 for groups P1, P2, and P3 therefore control groups gives p=0,005. The decrease of cLDL serum level in Group P1 was 48,08%, P2 was 79,89%, and P3 was 91,25%. The post-test cLDL level comparison between groups shows significant result with p=0,000 on all compared groups. Conclusion: Administration of Hibiscus sabdariffa infusion at all dose (125mg/kgBW/day, 250mg/kgBW/day, and 500mg/kgBW/day) show significant lowering effect of cLDL level. Those lowering effect increasing linearly along with the dose, which higher dose give higher effect. The optimum dose in this study reached by dose 500mg/kgBW/day.
