Abstract
Background: Shallots contain phytochemistry substances such as saponin and quercetin. Based on some research, quercetin and saponin have benefit in reducing blood LDL-Cholesterol. But there isn’t research about the effect of shallot in blood LDL-Cholesterol. This study is aimed to prove the shallot (Allium ascalonicum) extract can reduce serum LDL-Cholesterol level hyperlipidemia wistar rats. Methods: This was experimental study with post test only control group design. Four groups of Wistar were used in this research. Group K- which consist of seven Wistar rats were given standard diet. The group which consist of 21 Wistar rats were given standard diets for four weeks, injected by 0.006 mg adrenaline on eighth day, followed by egg yolk intermitten dietary on the 9th-35th . This group were randomized and divided into three groups and each group consist of seven Wistar rats. Group K+ were given standard diet and one ml placebo for three weeks. Group P1 were given standard diet and one ml shallots extract for three weeks. Group P2 were given standard diet and two ml shallots extract for three weeks. Finally on the 56th day, the serum LDL-Cholesterol level were measured. Result: Mean of Group K- (14.1 ± 1.6) was the highest among all groups. Mean of Group K+ (9.5 ± 6.4) was lower than group P1 (12 ± 5.8) and group P2 (11.5 ± 5.7). Kruskall-Wallis test wasn’t significantly different between groups (p=0.575, p>0.05). Mann-Whitney test between groups K- and K+ (p=0.122), groups K- and P1 (p=0.897, p>0.05), groups K- and P2 (p=0.562, p>0.05), groups K+ and P1 (p=0.405, p>0.05), groups K+ and P2 (p=0.481, p>0.05), groups P1 and P2 (p=0.847, p>0.05) showed there weren’t significantly different result. Conclusion: Shallots (Allium ascalonicum) extract in one ml and two ml for three weeks weren’t reduce serum LDL-Cholesterol level in hyperlipidemia wistar rats. Keyword: Allium ascalonicum LDL-Cholesterol
