Abstract

Background: Kangkung leaves extract can help to overcome dandruff. Researchers were interested in conducting research on the properties of kangkung leaves extracts in vitro against Pityrosporum ovale as a cause of dandruff. Method: This study used laboratory experimental methods with post test only control design. Pityrosporum ovale was cultured on the media SDA + olive oil as control, SDA media + olive oil containing ketoconazole 1% and SDA media + olive oil containing kangkung leaves extract as the treatment group. In this study its declared effective if on the control group Pityrosporum ovale was growing. On treatment media Pityrosporum ovale did not grow, and ineffective if on the control and treatment media Pityrosporum ovale was growing, where as if on the control media Pityrosporum ovale did not grow, its excluded from this study. Result: From this research, obtained 30 sample cultures and were planted on control and treatment media. In control media, samples were overgrown with Pityrosporum ovale. On treatment media with ketoconazole 1% only 1 media was overgrown with Pityrosporum ovale. On treatment media with kangkung leaves extract, there were six media overgrown with Pityrosporum ovale. From Fisher's analysis test result, the value of p > 0.05 indicating non significant. Conclusion: The kangkung leaves extract have the same effectiveness with ketoconazole 1% in vitro. Keywords: kangkung leaves extract, ketoconazole 1%, dandruff, Pityrosporum ovale, Sabouraud Dextrose Agar
