Abstract

Background: Lately there are many cases of deaths caused by consuming of oplosan. Oplosan is often a mixture of ethanol and methanol. Methanol metabolism mainly occurs in the liver, so the possibility of damage to this organ becomes very large. The purpose of this study is to know the effect of giving methanol 50% multistep doses per oral to liver cell damage grades in Wistar rats. Methods: This research was an experimental study using the post test only controlled group design. The samples were 20 rats, randomly divided into 4 groups. K was control group which was only given aquadest. P1, P2, and P3 were treatment groups which were given methanol 2 mg/kgBW, 4mg/kgBW, and 6mg/kgBW. The methanol was orally given with sonde every day. At 10th day, the rats were terminated, and histopathological of liver were observed. Results: The score evaluated normal, parenchymatous degeneration, hydropic degeneration, and necrosis. The Anova test showed significant difference (p=0,001). Continued with Post Hoc test that showed significant difference in K-P2(p=0,041), K-P3(p=0,000), P1-P3(p=0,001) ,P2-P3(0,036). Conclusion: The acute treatment of methanol affect the histopathological appearance of liver, but it showed the damage on liver histopathological when be given in doses 4mg/kgBW or more. Keywords: methanol, liver histopathology
