Abstract

Background: Delivery by medical personnel is one of strategic to solve mother and child health problem in Indonesia. Based on data from Puskesmas Rawat Inap Grabag I, delivery by traditional birth attendants in Desa Banjarsari, Kecamatan Grabag, Kabupaten Magelang are still very high at 54,05% in 2009. This research is aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of education, the level of knowledge, economic status, perception, and affordability of health facilities with the choice of delivery assistance by traditional birth attendants. Methods: This research was an analytic observational research applying cross sectional design. The sample criteria were mothers who gave birth in 2009, both gave birth in a state of life or death, whose name are recorded in the mother’s maternity target data in Desa Banjarsari, Kecamatan Grabag, Kabupaten Magelang. The total numbers of sample were 37 respondens. Data collection was conducted by interview using a questionnaire that has been tested for validity. The data was tested with Chi square and Fisher exact test. Result: In this research, we found that 55,6% of mothers choosing aid deliveries by traditional birth attendants and 44,4% by a midwife. There is significant relationship between the level of knowledge (p=0,000), economic status (p=0,036), and affordability of health facilities (p=0,000) with the choice of delivery assistance by traditional birth attendants. There is no significant relationship between the level of education (p=0,159) and perception with the choice of delivery assistance by traditional birth attendants. Conclusion: The factors which have significant relationship with the choice of delivery assistance by traditional birth attendants is the level of knowledge, economic status and affordability of health facilities. Education level and perception doesn’t have a significant relationship with the choice of delivery assistance by traditional birth attendants.
