Abstract

Background : Tolak Angin Anak Cair is one of immunostimulants used for enhancing immune response. Tolak Angin Cair, which has similar components to Tolak Angin Anak Cair, significantly increases the number of peripheral T cells and Interferon – gamma (IFN-γ) level. IFN-γ is one of the mediators of immune system that functions primarily in macrophage activation. This study was aimed to analyze the effect of Tolak Angin Anak Cair on the IFN-γ level of Swiss mice. Methods : Experimental laboratory study with post test only control group design were performed. Forty Swiss mice weighing 25 – 35 grams of 12 weeks old were equally divided into four groups which were : K (control), P1 (Tolak Angin Anak Cair 0,125 ml), P2 (Tolak Angin Anak Cair 0,25 ml), and P3 (Tolak Angin Anak Cair 0,5 ml). The mice were administered with Tolak Angin Anak Cair for seven days, then terminated. Afterwards, the spleen cells were isolated from mice to measure the IFN-γ level. The results were analyzed through each group with Krusskall – Wallis test. Them continued with Mann – Whitney test. Result : There were significant differences of the IFN-γ level between the control group and the groups administered with Tolak Angin Anak Cair (p<0,05). There was no significant difference in IFN-γ level between groups of different doses (p>0,05). Conclusion : Tolak Angin Anak Cair can significantly increase the IFN-γ level of Swiss mice. Different level doses of administration does not result in different level of IFN-γ. Key words : IFN-γ, Tolak Angin Anak Cair
