Abstract
Background: Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa) contains anthocyanins, niacin and fiber. Some literatures said that all these compounds can increase HDL cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to determine the effect of roselle’s dried calyx infusion on serum HDL cholesterol. Methods: This Experimental research utilized with Pre and Post Test randomized controlled Group Design. The sample consisted of 24 Sprague-Dawley rats, 8-week-old male which previously adapted for one week and then divided equally into four groups (randomly determined): K (control), P1 (treatment 1), P2 (treatment 2), P3 group (treatment 3). And then given high-fat diet for 4 weeks. After that, all rats performed a pre-test. Furthermore, all group received standard diet, while P1 also received steeping of 125mg/KgBW/day HS, P2 received 250 mg/KgBW/day HS, and P3 received 500mg/KgBW/day HS. Post-test was performed after six weeks of treatment,. All data obtained from the examination of blood serum HDL cholesterol levels from the retroorbitalis venous plexus with CHOD-PAP method and analyzed with SPSS for Windows 15. Result: Comparison of HDL cholesterol pre-test and post-test in all groups showed significant increase of HDL cholesterol level in P1 (30,25%), P2 (41,44%), and P3 (61,74%). Mann-whitney test showed significant difference in HDL cholesterol from the post-test between all groups with p = 0.002, except, between K and P1 with p=0,004. Conclusion: Administration of roselle’s dried calyx steeping at 125, 250, and 500 mg / KgBW/day dosage for 6 weeks increase HDL cholesterol serum level. Keywords: Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa, HDL cholesterol
