Abstract

Background : The epidemiology of fungal infection in humans is increasing. Candida species is the most frequent pathogens in humans. Red betel vine leaves as one of natural remedy of traditional plant contain saponin, flavonoid, polifenol, kavicol, kavibetol, ponlen, and atsiri oil which have antifungall activity. The occurance of ketoconazole resistance in Candida isolates. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of red betel vine leaves extract with ketoconazole 2% to the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 on SDA medium. Method : This study was done by laboratory experimental method. Sample was Candida ATCC 10231. The colonies of Candida ATCC 10231 from reculturitation were diluted in sterile 0,9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0,5 Mc Farland. As many as 0,1 cc of solution was cultivated on SDA medium supplemented with 100%, 50%, and 25% red betel vine leaves extract and ketoconazole 2%. The mediums were incubated at 37ºC for 1-2 days. The difference proportion of growth was analyzed by Fisher’s exact test with p≤0,05. Result : The result of Fisher’s exact test between 100% red betel vine leaves extract and ketoconazole 2% was p=0,545, or not significantly different, as well as 50% red betel vine leaves extract vs ketoconazole 2% (p=0,545) and 25% red betel vine leaves extract vs ketoconazole 2% (p=1,000). The MIC of red betel vine leaves extract to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 was 12,5%. Conclusion : 100%, 50%, and 25% red betel vine leaves extract is not effective to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 on SDA medium. 100%, 50%, and 25% red betel vine leaves extract are proved as effective as ketoconazole 2% to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 on SDA medium. The MIC of red betel vine leaves extract to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 is 12,5%. Key words :Candida ATCC 10231, Red betel vine leaves, Ketoconazole 2%
