Abstract

Background : Candida is a normal flora in the respiratory tract, intestinal tract, and genital mucosal. However, an increased population of candida can cause a disease called candidiasis. The tendency of public to go back to natural material began to rise. Pacar air leaves as one of traditional medicinal plants contain saponins which have antifungal activity. Ketoconazole 2% is an antimycotic that is effective against Candida. This study is intended to compare the effectiveness between pacar air leaves extract and ketoconazole 2% to the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 on SDA medium. Method: This study was a laboratory experimental method. As a sample, we used Candida ATCC 10231. The colonies of Candida were diluted in a steril 0.9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0,5 Mc.Farland. As many as 0,1 cc of solution was cultived on SDA medium supplemented with 100%, 50%, dan 25% pacar air leaves extract and ketoconazole 2%. The mediums were incubated at 370 C for 1-2 days. the growth proportion was analyzed by fischer exact test with p≤ 0,05 Result: The result of Fischer’s exact test between 100% pacar air leaves extract and ketoconazol 2% was p=0,091,or not significantly different, as well as 50% pacar air leaves extract vs ketokonazol 2% (p=0,091) and 25% pacar air leaves extract vs ketoconazole 2% (p=0,500) respectively. The MIC of pacar air leaves extract to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 is 12,5% Conclusion: Pacar air leaves extract in 100%, 50%, dan 25% concentration are proved to be similarity effective as 2% ketoconazole to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 on SDA medium. The MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) of pacar air leaves extract to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 is 12,5%. Pacar air leaves extract in 100% and 50% concentration are effective to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 on SDA medium, but pacar air leaves extract in 5% concentration isn’t effective to inhibit the growth of Candida ATCC 10231 on SDA medium.
