Abstract

Background : Hibiscus sabdariffa is one of the public health drink known as roselle tea. According to the result of previous research, it proved as an antioxidant, anticancer, antihypertension and decreasing cholesterol levels. Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) will undergo metabolism process in the liver after absorbed by intestine. Liver is the main place for detoxication so it often damaged which marked histological structure changes. Methods : The design of this research was Post Test Only Control Group, using 20 wistar male rats, divided randomly in 4 groups K : no treatment just given water; group P1 was given 40 mg/day roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) calyces steeping oral; group P2 was given 60 mg/day; group P3 was given 90 mg/day for 30 days for each group. Data was analyzed with Kruskal Wallis. The differences between groups were then analyzed with Mann Whitney Result : Shapiro Wilk test result showed distribution of data was abnormal (p<0,05) then analyzed with Kruskal Wallis test and this test showed significant difference (p=0,001). The Mann Whitney test result showed significant difference (p<0,05) from each groups. Conclusion : There were differences of liver histological appearance as parenchymatous degeneration, hidropic degeneration, up to necrosis between group which given roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) calyces steeping oral and control group, and there were differences of liver histological appearance among treatment group to each other. Keywords : Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), liver, parenchymatous degeneration, hidropic degeneration, necrosis
