Abstract

Background : Kemangi (a shrub) was known having effect in central nervous system. In depression, poor consentration and lessen thinking capacity were found. The aim of this study is to know effect of stratified dose of essensial oil of Ocimum basilicum (a species of kemangi) as antidepressant observed from cognition capacity in wistar rat with RAM. Method : An experimental laboratory with post test only control group design. Total sample is 25 male wistar rats divided randomly in 2 control group : K- & K+ (given stressor only) and 3 treatment group (given stressor and essential oil of Ocimum basilicum 2,5x10-4 ml/kg BB, 2,5x10-3 ml/kg BB, and 2,5x10-2 ml/kg BB). Stressor was given for 21 days. The essensial oil was given orally with gastric sonde, started in eight day until the last day of the stressor. Wistar’s errors in RAM as the data were analysed using Kruskall-Wallis test. Knowing lessen cognition capacity because of depressive condition, Mann-Whitney test was done between K- & K+. Result : Means of wistar’s errors in RAM for each groups: K- (0,20), K+ (2,80), P1 (1.00), P2 (1.40), P3 (2,20). Kruskall-Wallis test showed no significant difference among the groups (p = 0,326). Mann-Whitney test showed significant difference ( p = 0,044 ). Conclusion : Depressive condition emerged by repeated stressor reduce cognition capacity in wistar rat. Stratified dose of essensial oil of Ocimum basilicum has no effect as antidepressant observed from cognition capacity in wistar rat with RAM . Keyword : Ocimum basilicum, antidepressant, cognition capacity, RAM
