Abstract

Background: Indonesia is rich in potential natural vegetation where provides a natural ingredient of medicinal plants like Ocimum basilicum which has essential oil containing and can be used as anti-depressants. Measurement of anti-depressant effects through the forced swim test methode with a view of immobility time can be interpreted as a despair in depression syndrome Method: Using Experimental Research Post Test Only Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 16 weeks 25 rats were divided into five groups: K (-) is the group who did not receive treatment, K (+) is the group who were not given essential oil and created stress, P1 is the group that created stress and given the essential oil with dose 2.5 x 10 -4 ml / kg / bw / day , P2 is the group that created stress and given the essential oil with dose 2.5 x 10 -3 ml / kg / bw / day. P3 is the group that created stress and given the essential oil with dose 2.5 x 10 -2 ml / kg / bw / day. The data obtained in the form of immobility time. Data were tested by One Way ANOVA. Results: The immobility time in the group of K (-) are (139.40 ± 23.028), K (+) (146.20 ± 18.019); P1 (176.80 ± 15.723); P2 (140.40 ± 27.700); P3 (132.40 ± 16.920). One way anova test was significant difference between groups (p = 0.026, p <0.05). The significant comparison are K(-) with P1, K(+) with P1, P2 with P1,and P3 with P1. Conclusion: Essential oil of Ocimum basilicum has effect as an anti-depressant effects Key words: Ocimum basilicum, essential oils, forced swim test, immobility time.
