Abstract
Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a tumor arising from the epithelial cells that cover the surface the nasopharynx. Three histopathological classification of NPC are recognized in the WHO: WHO 1 (keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma), WHO 2 (non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma), WHO 3 (undifferentiated carcinoma). It was reported that WHO 3gave a better response to radiation, but they don’t explain about the stage. This study is aimed to prove the association between histopathological classification with response to chemoradiation therapy based on CT-scan imaging of nasopharynx carcinoma patients, in each stage. Methods : This was a coss-sectional study. The subjects were medical record of patient that diagnosed clinically and histopoathologicaly suffered from nasopharynx carcinoma and had been treated with chemoradiation therapy in Kariadi Hospital, Semarang, in 1st January 2007 untill 31th December 2009. Chi-square (X2) and Fisher’s Exact were used for test of hipothesis. Results: There were 55 nasopharynx carcinoma patients that had been treated with chemoradiation. In stage II dan III, 100% WHO 3 patients and 50% WHO 2 patients had positive response (partial response and complete response). Result of Fisher’s Exact test in stage II dan III, p=0.014. In stage IV, 61.5% WHO 2 patients and 61.1% WHO 3 patients had positive response. Result of Chi square test in stage IV, p=0.981. Conclusion: There is significant association between histopathological classification with response to chemoradiation therapy based on CT scan imaging in stage II and III disease. There is no significant association between histopatological classification with response to chemoradiation therapy in stage IV disease. Keywords: nasopharynx carcinoma, histopathological classification, stage of disease, response to chemoradiation.
