Abstract

Background: Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is one of traditional medicine that has some active chemical compounds. One of the chemical compounds is tannin. High dose of tannin might cause irritation on gastrointestinal mucous membrane. This study aimed to examine the subchronic effect of valerian extract on gaster of wistar rat. Method: This research was an experimental study using The Post Test Only Controlled Group Design. 20 male Balb/c mice were divided into 1 control group and 3 treatment groups. The extract is given orally for three months. The control group was given aquadest, P1, P2, P3 were given doses of 9,18,32 mg valerian extract per rat. Three months later rats were terminated, and gaster were made into slides. Result: Gastric macroscopic data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and obtained p= 0.392. Gastric histopathology data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and showed p = 0.007 and continued with the Mann-Whitney test showed that there were significant differences between the K-P1 (p = 0.033), K-P2 (p = 0.008), K-P3 (p = 0.014), and P1-P2 (p = 0.032 ). Conclusion: The subchronic administration of valerian extract has no significant influence on the macroscopic of gaster but exerts significant influence on gastric histopathological of rats. Keywords: Valerian, tannin, gastric histopathological
