Abstract

Background: Simvastatin is a drug which cause most of the cases reported in statin associated memory loss. Raised dislipidemic cases lead raise in statin use especially simvastatin. Besides that, simvastatins must be consume their entire life just to control serum lipid profile. So there should be a research to know if simvastatin have effect on short term memory. Methods: Experimental laboratoric research with pre-post test control group design. With three times measurement as long as treatment went. Sample consists of 40 wistar rats, divide randomly into 3 groups consists of control group, 2 treatment group consists of simvastatin 20mg and simvastain 80mg. Three groups were given intermittent diet of egg yolk for three weeks. Treatment lasted for six weeks. Memory were measured by morris water maze by counting mistakes. Measurement of memory function were done four times, first were after the intermittent diet of yolk and the rest were taken in the six weeks time when treatment were given. Result: Average mistakes in each group were declining. With control group being the farthest to decline. Kruskal-Wallis test in each group were p>0,05 from first phase until the forth phase. While friedman test showed p>0,05 in control group nor simvastatin 20mg and simvastatin 80mg. Conclusion: There were no significant difference in hyperlipidemic rat short term memory function between group that had simvastatin and control group in six weeks treatment. Keywords: Simvastatin, short term memory
