Abstract

Background: Methanol is the simplest form of alcohol which is used for industrial solvent but often misused as a liquor ingredient. Gastric is main place for methanol absorption, thus the chance of this organ getting damage is very high. A number of methanol toxicity have been reported but study about effect of methanol to gastric hasn’t done yet. This study aims to determine the effect of duration of giving methanol 50% per oral to gastric cell damage grades in Wistar rat. Methods: The experimental study was designed with post test only controlled group. Samples of 20 Wistar rats were divided into one control group and three treatment groups. Giving of methanol 50% was did through sonde at dose of 6 ml/kg body weight. K were not given methanol. P1 were given methanol for 5 days. P2 were given methanol for 10 days. P3 were given methanol for 15 days. After treatment with methanol according to the time that had been set, the rats were decapitated, did an autopsy, and made gastric preparations histopathologically. Results: The study of gastric histopathology were analyzed using Anova test showed p=0.000. Followed by Post Hoc test results show that there are significant differences between K-P1 (p=0.001), K-P2 (p=0.000), K-P3 (p=0.000), P1-P3 (p=0.000), and P2-P3 (p=0.000). Conclusion: Giving methanol 50% per oral in 5, 10, and 15 days can significantly increase gastric cell damage grades in Wistar rat compared with the control group. Keywords: methanol, gastric, Wistar rat
