Abstract

Background: The use of anesthesia induction drugs is an important factor influencing hemodynamic stability during the perioperative periode. Etomidate is preferred to propofol for anesthesia induction in haemodynamically unstable patients. The purpose of this study was to compare the hemodynamic effects of propofol vs. etomidate for induction anesthesia. Method: Sampel consisted of 40 patients undergoing elective surgery with general anesthesia in Dr.Kariadi, Central Operating Installation, that has fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and then divided into two groups randomly: group I received propofol 2.5 mg / kg and groups II received etomidate 0.2 mg / kg. Hemodynamic measurements with non invasive Siemens monitor SC 7000, including systolic blood pressure, diastolik blood pressure, pulse, and MAP in the non-invasive performed. Results: Compared with before inductions, Systolic pressure, diastolik pressure, pulse, and MAP decreased significantly after induction in both groups (p<0,01), then increased significantly at the 3rd minutes post intubation in both groups. At 6th minutes post intubation was increased significantly in diastolik pressure, pulse, and MAP in both groups. Signifcant difference of haemodynamic changes in 2 groups are on the pulse between minutes 9th post intubation with minutes 12 post intubation (p= 0,035), and MAP that occurred between the minutes 3th post intubation with minutes 9th post intubations (p=0,024). Conclusion: There were no significant haemodynamic differences between the induction of propofol and etomidate. Keywords: propofol, etomidate, the induction of anesthesia, haemodynamic
