Abstract

Backgrounds : Low back pain (LBP) is one of disturbing symptoms which could interfere patients’ daily activities. One of its causes is herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) which most case happened in lumbar segment of the vertebrae. Radicular pain of sciatic nerve called sciatica is an important clinical symptom of HNP. Sciatica, however, can be provoked by Laseque’s test. The patients might also complain a decrease vertebral range of motion (ROM). Previous research worked out in finding how pain sensation could result in functional limitation of movement, while this study is searching for correlation between sciatic pain and decreased vertebral ROM. Both of sciatic pain and vertebral ROM can be observed by the scoring of Laseque’s test and modified Schober test (MST). Objective : The purpose of this study is to figure any correlation between Laseque’s test score which expects sciatica and MST score which shows vertebral ROM in clinical lumbar HNP patients. Method : This study is an observational research which is using cross-sectional research design as its method. Pearson correlation has been opted to analyze the correlation between Laseque’s test score and MST score, while multiple regression was done to some other variable such as age, duration, waist, sensibility disorder and motoric disorder in their association with MST score. Results : This study took place in Kariadi hospital Semarang, started on March 2010 until the end of June 2010. Thirty patients whom passed the inclusion criteria were observed to determine the scoring of Laseque’s test and MST. Analysis resulted in a significant correlation between Laseque’s test score and modified Schober test score (r = 0,44; r = 0,61; Sig.<α). Some other variables (age, duration, waist, sensibility disorder, motoric disorder) were analyzed using the multiple regressions, resulted in their association with MST score, though none of them were significant. The regression coefficients were all negative. Conclusion : There is a correlation between Laseque’s test score and modified Schober test score in clinical lumbar HNP patients. Keywords : lumbar HNP, Laseque’s test, modified Schober test (MST)
