Abstract

Background: Shallot (Allium ascalonicum) contains quercetin considered has a potential as hypoglycemic agent through its inhibition acting to alpha amylase enzyme which play a role in carbohydrate digestion. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of shallot extract in blood glucose level reduction in hyperglycemic rats. Methods: This study was experimental study with pre and post test control group design, using male rats induced hyperglycemic with 20% fructose dissolved in 50 ml drinking water for a period of six weeks. Samples consist of eight-teen rats were divided into three groups, group I as control (administred of placebo), group II (administred of shallot extract 2ml/w) and group III (administered of shallot extract 4 ml/w) daily for four weeks period. All of the fasting blood glucose level’s samples have been measured before and after treatment. The data have been described in table form, analyzed with Saphirowilk test for the normality of the data, furthermore analyzed with paired sample t test and independent sample t test to know which group whose have significant blood glucose level reducction. This data analysis using SPSS for windows 15.00. Result: Paired sample t test with p<0.001 shows that there was a significant difference of fasting blood glucose level in hyperglycemic rats before and after shallot extract administration. The result of independent sample t test for group I and II, p=0.166 and for group I and III p=0.045 have shown that the significant reduction of fasting blood glucose level only in group III (group which get shallot extract 4 ml/w daily administration for four weeks period) with mean of reduction is 29,5±20,46 mg/dl. Conclusions: Shallot extract (Allium ascalonicum) can reduce blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic rats with the significant reduction in shallot extract 4 ml/w daily administration for four weeks period. Keywords: hyperglycemia, shallot extract
