Abstract

Background: Children is a source of nasopharyngeal colonization by S.pneumoniae and can spread to the human kind. Main of this study is to search the risk factors of nasopharyngeal colonization by S.pneumoniae in children. Methods: An observasional analytic study with cross sectional at 199 children who 6-60 months old in Semarang province. Data has been collected by nasopharynx swab and questionnaire then it isolated and incubated at CO2 5% incubator in 37oC within 48 hours on Blood Agar plate, and MacConkey plate. Identification has been done with Optochin Test. Data has been processed using Chi-Square Test/Fisher and then undergo to search the prevalence ratio of risk factors of nasopharngeal colonization by S.pneumoniae. Results: The prevalence of S.pneumoniae colonized subject is 43.2%. The risk factor of age founded RP=0.886, and 95%CI=0.500-1.568, breast feeding RP=0.437, and 95%CI=0.151-1.263, cigarette expose RP=0.654, and 95%CI=0.364-1.174, and crowded place RP=0.680, and 95%CI=0.387-1.195. Conclusion: Age, breast feeding, cigarette expose, and crowded place are not the risk factors of nasopharyngeal colonization by S.pneumoniae in children. Key words: risk factors, S.pneumoniae colonization
