Abstract
Background: Laryngospasm is the main complication in airway surgery. Several tasks are applied to prevent laryngospasm in post-operation extubation. This research is aiming to compare laryngospasm incidence in awake no touch extubation and awake extubation with topical lidocaine after tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy surgery. Methods: An observational research with cross-sectional design. Samples are taken from RSUP dr. Kariadi patients which undergoing tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy surgery in September to May 2010 and fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Samples are chosen from consecutive random sampling using random numeric table. Samples are divided into 2 groups. Group I use awake extubation with topical lidocaine and group II use awake no touch extubation. Each group consists of 30 samples. Results: Laryngospasm incidence in group I and group II is 0%. Conclusion: There is no difference in laryngospasm incidence between no touch awake extubation and awake extubation with topical lidocaine. Key Words: laryngospasm, extubation
