Abstract

Background: The incidence of laryngospasm on airway surgery like tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy was 21-26%. On the prior research, by using this extubation technique, the laryngospasm incidence was 0%, whereas the technique of awake extubation with intravenous lidocaine was 22%. The purpose of this research is to compare between ‘no touch’ awake extubation technique and awake extubation with intravenous lidocaine toward laryngospasm incidence in tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy surgery. Method: The design was cross sectional study. The sample was patients of Dr.Kariadi Hospital underwent tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy surgery, with used consecutive random sampling. The sample amount was 60 patients, on group I (‘no touch’ awake extubation technique) was 30 patients and in group II (control) was 30 patients. The incidence of laryngospasm after the extubation was measured with two point (no laryngospasm and laryngospasm) by two observers. Statistical test was completed by using Chi-square test, significance level of p<0,2. Result: The incidence of laryngospasm on ‘no touch’ awake extubation technique was 0%. The incidence of laryngospasm on awake extubation with intravenous lidocaine was 16,6% (5 patients). Chi-square test, the value of p=0,052 (significant). Conclusion: There is a difference of the incidence of laryngospasm on ‘no touch’ awake extubation technique and the awake extubation with intravenous lidocaine technique. Keyword: ‘no touch’ awake extubation technique, awake extubation with intravenous lidocaine, laryngospasm
