Abstract
Background: Community has important role in transmission of Staphylococcus aureus’ strain among human, but the study about Staphyococcus aureus is more likely focused on Staphylococcus aureus as a source of hospital-acquired infection. By the development of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the impact to human health condition is getting worse. Therefore, the research about Staphylococcus aureus in community is important to do. High school adults are one of many age groups that could do transmission among each other. Objective: To know factors that associated with carriage of Staphylococcus aureus among healthy high school adults, especially in Semarang. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using 102 healthy high school students who had been choosed by simple random sampling. The nose swab had been done during April 2010, then continued with bacterial culture with blood agar medium in the laboratory of FK Undip. Beside that, the primary and secondary data had been taken from research subjects by doing the quesionaire. The data was analyzed by prevalence ratio (PR) using SPSS for Windows 17.0. Result: Smoking behavior (PR = 1.100, 95%CI = 0.216-5.603), nose picking behavior (PR = 1.451, 95%CI = 0.747-2.818) and antibiotic usage (PR = 0.936, 95%CI = 0.279-3.139) don’t have significant relationship to carriage of Staphylococcus aureus. No hand washing with soap behavior (PR= 2.053, 95%CI=1.173-3.592 ) is a risk factor for Staphylococcus aureus’ carrier. Conclusion: Smoking behavior, nose picking behavior and antibiotic usage are not the factors that associated with carrier of Staphylococcus aureus in healthy high school student in Semarang. Hand washing with soap behavior is factor associated with carrier of Staphylococcus aureus in healthy high school student in Semarang. Keywords: risk factor, Staphylococcus aureus, carriage.
