Abstract

Marine algae as a food have the capacity to accumulate iodin in their tissues and therefor they become naturarul source of iodin. Iodine is very important as a trace element in healthy diet humans. The fucntion of iodin is to become an integral part of thyroid hormones, mostly thyroxine. The need for iodine can be aquated with the need for thyroid hormon production. The thyroxine hormone is a main hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Based on those facts, this research was aimed to study the concentration of iodine in different groups of marine algae in jepara waters and adjacent dan to compare the concentration of iodine from some of marine algae. The freshly of marine algae Caulerpa sp, Glacilaria gigas dan Glacilaria sp were collected from Jepara waters and adjacent during July 2004. The spesimens were washed with fresh water and freed from extraneous matter and immediately bring out to laboratory of Exploration and Biotechnology Diponegor University for identification of marine algae. The detection of iodine content was done in Departement of Health Politechnic Nutrition Semarang. The specimens were dried till become ashed 500 — 600 °C for about 6 hours and concentration of iodine was done by spectrophotometer. Results from identification of marine algae showed that the dominan spesimens found in Jepara waters and adjacent dining collection sample were Caulerpa sp, Glacilaria gigas dan Glacilaria sp. From sample studied showed that iodine present in marone algae of Caulerpa sp, Glacilaria gigas dan Glacilaria sp. In the present anaysis, Caulerpa sp showed the higher valule of iodine content ( 490 fit g/I00 gr) then Glacilaria gigas 380 fix g/100 gr), and Glacilaria. Sp 320 (p. g/100 gr). Sp 320 (p g/100 gr)Caulerpa sp teringgi (isg/g100)
