Abstract
Zn is an essential element for human health as it involves in the synthesis or degradation of carbohydrate, lipid, protein and nucleic acid. Zn also involves in the protein stabilization, nuleic acid structure, integrity of sub cellular organel, transportation prowess, immune function and expression of genetic information. Besides, Zn is a cofactor of many enzymes. Transferin takes Fe and Zn and distributes them to the bone marrow and oilier blood production places. There is a competition between Fe and Zn anorganik to be absorbed by intestines. Zit a high absorption, transferin will bind more and less transferrin will be available for Zn binding site. The comsumption of inorganic Zn and organic Fe (heme) do not affect Zn absorption. The consumption of organic Zn with fieSO4 also do not affect Zn absorption. If there is a ligan in the food, Zn will be absobed through another pathway that is not affected by Fe cocentration. If there is no ligand in food, Fe and Zn will compete to get binding site in the surface of intestines. Element which has higher concentration will inhibit other element to get transferin binding site. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of Zn status of pregnant women supplemented with Fe-folate tablet on the result of the supplementation. Experimental design one group pretest postest was used in this investigation. The samples were pregnant women of timester II with hb 9 - 10.9 a/di Karang Awent district. The pregnant women were given Fe-folate pills consisting of 60 mg Fe and 025 mg folid acid twice a week for 2 months. The results indicated that 51 pregnant women of trimester II suplemented by Fe-folate pills showed a decrease of serum fesitin, and no improvement in Jib level. The odd ratio in women with Zn deficiency toward the failure to improve HU level post supplementation is 13.96 (C4>3.25-60.02). It is concluded that pregnant women with Zn deficiency and suplemented with iron tables have higher risk of not to achieving I-lb improvement.
