Abstract
Background: The incidence of typhoid fever in Indonesia still high. Salmonella typhimurium which was infected to BAlb/C mice will shows similar effect with tifoid fever in human. Liver was one of reticuloendotelial organ which can be the site of Salmonella typhimurium growth. Bay leaves usage as drug has been done by civilian. Bay leaves contain agents such as essensial oil (sitral and eugenol),tannin and flavonoid could induce the immune system including phagocytosis and has a bacterial killing. Objective: To find out the effect of bay leaves extract on the number Salmonella typhimurium colonies in the BAlb/C mice liver infected by Salmonella typhimurium Method: : An experimental study with the post-test only control group design was carried out on sample, consisted of 10 male BAlb/C mice, devided into 2 group. K (+) was control group which only infected by S. typhimurium 106 intra peritoneal in 1stday. T was experiment group which infected by S. typhimurium 106 in 1st day and get bay leaves with dose28,35 mg/day from the 2nd until the 4th day peroral. In the fifth day, the liver tissues were taken and cultured in Salmonella Shigella agar medium. The number of bacteria colony were calculated after incubated at 37° C for 24 hours. The data were analyzed by Independent sample T-Test. Result: The average of the number of bacteria colony in the control positif group are15.7927 x 104 , the bay leaves with 135 mg dose group are 5.285 x 104 Independent sample T-Test shows p=0,287 (p>0,05). Conclusion: Bay leaves with 135 mg dose can reduce the number of bacteria colony in the mice liver infected by Salmonella typhimurium. There was no significant difference in reducing the number of bacteria colony between Bay leaves with 135 mg dose group and control positif group. Keywords: Bay leaves, bacteria colony, liver, Salmonella typhimurium
