Abstract
Background: Strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.) has been used for long time to cure many diseases. Previous studies show that strawberry juice was effective to inhibit plaque formation on teeth which caused by Streptococcus mutans. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure the antibacterial effect of Fragaria vesca L. juice in various concentrations for Streptococcus mutans. Method: This study was an experimental study using the “post test only control group design” using dilution method. The concentration of Fragaria vescda L. juice were 100%, 50%, 25% and 12,5%. MIC was determined by visual clarity of bacterial-Fragaria vesca L. juice suspension. MBC was determined by the ability to prevent Streptococcus mutans from growing on Blood Agar media. Statistical analysis was done by using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney Test. Results: Minimum Inhibitory Concentration against Streptococcus mutans on 12,5 % concentration and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration on 50 %. Conclusion: Strawberry juice was bacteriostatic at concentration 12,5 % and bacterisid at concentration 50 % for Streptococcus mutans. Keywords: Strawberry juice (Fragaria vesca L.), Streptococcus mutans, antibacterial effect, MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration), MBC (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration).
