Abstract

Background : Streptococcus mutans is the principle etiological agent of dental caries. The previous research has mentioned red grapes, derived from Vitis vinifera varians, could decreased plaque formation and suppressed the growth of oral bacteria associated with caries and gum disease. Objective : The purpose of this study was to measure the antibacterial effect of red grapes juice on S. mutans in vitro. Method : This study was an experimental study using post test only control group design. The method which was used in antibacterial activity test was dilution method. Red grapes dilution was divided into four test groups and three control groups. The test groups were treated with different concentrations of red grapes juice of 100%, 50%, 25%,and 12,5%. The other three control groups acted as positive control, negative control, and sample control. Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) was determined by visual clarity of red grapes juice on Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHIB). Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations (MBC) was determined by growth of S. mutans colonies in Blood Agar. Statistic analysis was done using Kruskal-Wallis Test and followed by Mann-Whitney Test. Results : Red grapes juice could inhibited S. mutans at the concentrations 50%, as well as eliminated them at the concentration 100%. Conclusions : Red grapes juice has bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects S. mutans. MIC for S. mutans was 50% and MBC was 100%. Keywords : Red grapes juice (Vitis vinifera), Streptococcus mutans, antibacterial
