Abstract

Background: Thypoid fever is one of the major health problems in Indonesia. Aloe vera is commonly use for traditional medicine. It has been reported that Aloe vera has antimicrobe effects. Therefore, Aloe vera can reduce the number of bacteria in infected organ, liver. Objective: To determine the effects of Aloe vera on the number of bacteria colony in liver of mice Balb/c which has been infected by Salmonella typhimurium? Method: This research was a laboratory experimental research using The Post Test-Only Control Group Design. The samples are 25 male mice Balb/c with specific criteria, and randomly divided into one control group and four treatment group. K as control group, infected by Salmonella typhimurium. Treatment group (P1,P2,P3,P4) given with 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg of ekstract Aloe vera each day for 15 days. At the 9 days, all mice were infected by Salmonella thyphimurium. Result : The average number of the bacteria colony in K group = 21,34 x 10 5 Cfu/gram tisues, P1 = 17,34 x 10 5 Cfu/gram tisues, P2 = 12,09 x 10 5 Cfu/gram tisues, P3 = 9,47 x 10 5 Cfu/gram tisues, P4 = 8,58 x 10 5 Cfu/gram tisues. There is a different number of bacteria colony group K-P1, K-P2, K -P3, K -P4, P1-P2, P1-P3, P1-P4, P2-P3, P2-P4. The others groups have no significant differences (p > 0, 05). Conclusion : the total number of bacteria colony in the Balb/c mice liver tissue that has been given with ekstract Aloe vera were lower than those that were not. Keywords: Aloe vera, bacteria colony, liver, Salmonella typhimurium
