Abstract
Background: Typhoid fever is an endemic disease in Indonesia caused by Salmonella typhimurium bacteria. Salmonella is facultative intracellular bacteria, so the immune system that works is cellular immune system. Aloe vera is a traditional herb contained active component that could drive phagocytosis activities. Purpose : To prove the effect of Aloe vera in lymphocites proliferation of Balb/c Mice Infected by Salmonella typhimurium. Method : An experimental study with the post-test only control group design was carried out on experiment animal Balb/c mice, consisted of 25 male mice which devided into 5 groups. K was control group which only infected by Salmonella typhimurium without treatment, and experiment groups (P1, P2, P3, P4) were treated with Aloe vera with gradual doses (10 mg; 20 mg; 40 mg; 80 mg) for 14 days which infected by 105 Salmonella typhimurium on the 9th day. On 15th day the spleen of Balb/c mice were isolated and lympocytes proliferation were counted. We gained the data from the calculation of lymphoblast amount in every 100 cells of homogen lymphocyte area. Results : There were significant differences in lymphoblast count between K-P1, K-P2, K-P3 and K-P4 (p<0.001). But there were no significant differences in lymphoblast count between P1-P2, P1-P3, P1-P4, P2-P3, P2-P4 and P3-P4 (p>0.001). Conclusion : There was significant increase of lymphocyte proliferation between the control and the experiment group that was treated by Aloe vera extract. Otherwise, there was no significant increase of lymphocyte proliferation among the experiment group that was treated by Aloe vera with gradual doses (10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg). Keywords : Lymphocyte proliferation, Aloe vera, Salmonella typhimurium.
