Abstract

Background : Nigella sativa has many functions, one of them is to protect the liver from side effects of drugs. Methotrexate is an anticancer drug of antimetabolit group that has strong liver toxic side effect. Therefore, it should be used with hepatoprotector agent. Extract of Nigella sativa can protect the liver by the ability for synthesizing albumin. The Objective : To define the influence of Nigella sativa’s extract in preventing liver damage evaluated from level of albumin in wistar rats after given toxic dose of methotrexate Methods : This research was a randomized controlled trial, using 30 Wistar rats divided into 5 groups. Group K1 was only given standard food. Group K2 was given standard food and methotrexate orally ( 0,54 ml ) started day 16th until 20th. Group P1 was given methotrexate orally ( 0,54 mg ) day 16th until 20th and N.Sativa 0,008 ml started on day 8th until day 21st. Group P2 was given methotrexate orally ( 0.54 mg ) day 16 th until day 20 th and N.Sativa 0,08 ml started on 8 th until day 21st. Group P3 was given methotrexate orally ( 0.54 mg ) day 16th until day 20th and N.Sativa 0.8 ml started on 8 th until day 21 st. On 22nd day, blood sample from eye vein was taken and albumin level was defined. Data was analysed with test of Anova with SPSS 15.0 for windows. Result : The result showed that there is no significant albumin differences in all groups ( p > 0.05 ) Conclusion : Nigella sativa’s extract does not prevent liver damage observed from albumin level. Keywords : Nigella sativa, Albumin, Methotrexate
