Abstract

Background : Phytoestrogens consumption in high dose was known can decrease testosterone level significantly. The decrease of testosterone level can disrupt spermatogenesis process, including sperm morphology and leading to male infertility. This statement became controversy since there was a researcher explained that there was no effect of phytoestrogens consumption in sperm morphology or man infertility. Phytoestrogens, especially isoflavone, are contained a lot in soybean. Objective : To know whether soybean extract could influence Balb/C male mice sperm morphology. Method : This experimental research was a post test only control group design on 36 Balb/C male mice, divided randomly into four groups ( K, A, B, C ) after adapted in a week. Every group was given standard diet. K was not given soybean extract, A was given 260 mg/day soybean extract, B was given 520 mg/day soybean extract, and C was given 780 mg/day soybean extract. Soybean extract was given for 21 days. All mice were terminated on 22nd days and sperm morphology were examined. Data of sperm morphology were collected and were analyzed using SPSS 15.00 for Windows along with Kruskal-Wallis test. Significant level was accepted when p<0,05. Result : Mean level of morphology abnormal sperm of four groups (K, A, B, C), respectively were 16,56±12,31; 20,44±9,97; 18,00±5,92; 21,67±8,24. Kruskal-Wallis test shown that there was no significant different between each group (p>0,05). Conclusion : There is no significant increasing in abnormality of Balb/C male mice sperm morphology. Keywords : Soybean extract, Male mice, Sperm morphology.
