Abstract

Background: Green tea contains polyphenol compound known as catechin. One of the advantages of this coumpund is to protect liver from destruction. The hepatoprotector effect of this green tea is found from its ability in increasing glutathione-s-transferase and neutralizing free radicals. Chloramphenicol if it is used too much, it will obstruct the work of cytochrom p-450. This will result in the disturbance of this medicine metabolism in liver so that the metabolit accumulation occurs, eventually able to destruct liver. This research is intended to test the effect of green tea in protecting liver from destruction by measure the SGOT. Materials and Method: This research is an experimental research with post test only control group design. The sample of this research is 30 female Wistar rats, aged 7 – 9 weeks. They are randomly divided into three groups. Negative control group is provided with standard food and aquadest, positive control group is given chloramphenicol 25 mg/kg BW per oral for 16 days, and treatmen group is given green tea 165 mg 2 times a day for 21 days and chloramphenicol 25 mg/ kg BW for 16 days. On the 22th day, the rats are determined and taken their blood as the sample to know the SGOT degree. Results: The result of this research shows that the degree of SGOT in the rats significantly (p  0,05) higher when given chloramphenicol with the dosage of 25 mg/kg BW than the rats which given aquadest. The degree of SGOT in the rats which given green tea two times a day with the amount of 165 mg is significantly lower than the rats which given chloramphenicol. Conclusion: Green tea is proved to be able to obstruct the destruction of liver by measure the degree of SGOT in Wistar rats which are given chloramphenicol. Key word : green tea, chloramphenicol, SGOT
