Abstract

Background: One of the content of green tea is polyphenol (catechin and flavonoids). Flavonoids of green tea is an antioxidant. A recent cross-sectional study in Japan revealed that in people consuming more than ten cups of green tea per day there is decrease in concentration of ezyme as liver damage signal. This research has the objective to find out the hepatoprotector effect of substance in the green tea (polyphenol) by measuring the total serum bilirubin as a liver damage marker. Methods: This research was laboratory experimental study which used the post tesy only control group design. Thirty female wistar rats divided into 3 groups, i.e. the negative control group, possitive control group and treatment group. Possitive control group was given chloramphenicol 25 mg/body weight/day and treatment group was chloramphenicol 25 mg/body weight/day and green tea 165mg/day. Vein blood was checked to get the total serum bilirubin. Results: The result of this research shows that there is significant difference of total serum bilirubin of wistar rats which was given given chloramphenicol with the dosage of 25 mg/kg BW (p<0,05). The giving of green tea 165 mg twice a day shows that there is no significant difference (p>0,05). Conclusion: The green tea is not proved to be able to protect liver from the destruction by measuring total serum bilirubin of wistar rats which are given chloramphenicol. .
