Abstract

Background: Health problems in elder people become main concern because the population increases. One of the problems is the decrease of musculoskeletal function influenced by the decrease of muscle mass. Activity like exercise can maintain the muscle mass. SSI (Senam Sehat Indonesia) is one of well known, easy and right exercise for elder people. The aim of this study is to compare muscle mass between elder people who exercise SSI regularly and who don’t with concerning age and Body Mass Index (BMI). Method: This is an observational study with sample from 2 different elder-people house based on inclusion criteria. To get the total of muscle mass, we measured the Mid Arm Circumference (MAC), Triceps Skinfold (TSF) and height followed by calculation with muscle mass formula. Body weight also is measured to calculate the muscle mass percentage and BMI. Data was analyzed with ANCOVA test with covariate age and Body Mass Index. Result: From 31 samples who exercise SSI regularly and 23 who do not, data analysis show that the muscle mass is better in the people who exercise SSI regularly(p=0,007). Samples who exercise regularly with BMI 21.78 kg/m2 have muscle mass percentage 28.96% of body weight. But people who don’t exercise SSI regularly with BMI 24.47 kg/m2 have muscle mass percentage 28.86% of body weight. Conclusion: Older people who exercise SSI regularly have better muscle mass that who do not. Keyword: Senam Sehat Indonesia, muscle mass
