Abstract
Background: Pityriasis versicolor is superficial fungal infection usually producing hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation macules in the stratum corneum of the skin.Malassezia furfur is the causing agent of pityriasis versicolor.Ketoconazole is an effective antifungal agent in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor by blocking ergosterol synthesis as an important component for membrane integrity of fungal cell.Morinda Citrifolia is an traditional drug which have the character of antioxidant, antibiotic and antifungal. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of 2% Morinda Citrifolia versus 2% ketoconazole in vitro to the growth of Malassezia furfur in pityriasis versicolor Method: This study was done by an experimental design. As samples were 30 patients of pityriasis versicolor with clinical founding.Diagnosis of Malassezia furfur was based on the result of microscopic examination of skin scrapping from samples with using KOH + blue black parker ink,and inoculation on the SDA olive oil + Amoxycillin 2mg/200cc medium at 370 C for 3 up to 5 days. The colonies of Malassezia furfur were diluted in steril 0,9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0,5 Mc Farland standard. As many as 0,1 cc of solution was cultivated on the olive oil SDA media supplemented with 2% Morinda citrifolia and 1% ketoconazole and then the media were incubated at 370 C for 2 days. The difference proportion of growth was analyzed by chi-square test with degree of signifance of p<0,05. Result: 30 media of olive oil SDA which contained 2% Morinda citrifolia,29(96,7%) were found (+)/positive for Malassezia furfur growth and 1(3,3%) were found (-) /absence for Malassezia furfur growth.Meanwhile,30 media which contained 2% ketoconazole,26(86,7%) were found positive and 4(13,3%) were found negative. The result of the chi-square test is not significant p=0,161. Conclusion: There is no significant difference between the effectiveness of two percent Morinda Citrifolia with two percent ketoconazole in inhibiting the growth of Malassezia furfur in Pityriasis versicolor. Key words : Pityriasis versicolor,Malassezia furfur,2% Morinda Citrifolia, 2% Ketoconazole.
