Abstract
Background : The high insidence of depression among psychiatric problems is considered as one of the main health problems in the world. Cervical cancer and breast cancer are two malignancies in women which cause distress. Beside the high frequency and high mortality, this is also related to women’s function of reproduction, motherhood symbol, sexual maturity and body figure. Objective : To compare the depression score between patients with cervical cancer and patients with breast cancer in Kariadi Hospital, Semarang. Method : This is an analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. 88 subjects from each type of cancer were patients with cervical cancer and patients with breast cancer who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The data was taken from July to November 2005 in Surgery and Gynaecology wards of Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Semarang. Depression was measured by Zung Self-rating Depression Scale(ZSDS). The data was analyzed by t-test. Result : There were 31,8% cervical cancer patients with depression; 22,7% were mild depression, 6,8% were moderate depression, and 2,2% were severe depression. There were 40,9% breast cancer patients with depression; 23,9% were mild depression, 12,5% were moderate depression, and 4,5% were severe depression. Mean depression score in patients with cervical cancer was 42,92±11,335, while in patients with breast cancer was 47,76±11,07. T-test analysis of mean depression score in patients with cervical cancer and patients with breast cancer showed significant difference (p=0,005). Conclusion : The mean depression score in patients with breast cancer is significantly higher than in patients with cervical cancer. Key words : Mean depression score, cervical cancer, breast cancer.
