Abstract

SUMMARY Sponge is a filter feeder animal that has incredible ability in filtering water up to 1200 times of its body volume in a day. Sponge also able to filter the organic matter and bacteria in water column up to 70 % and 95 %, respectively. Beside that the animal also produce the bioactive compound, therefore it is need to evaluated the potency as natural bio filter. Four sponges were collected from Jepara water in order to investigate the ability of the animal in reducing the bacteria and inorganic suspended material and also the effect of the sponge against survival rate of the shrimp larvae treated with Vibrio harveyi at 107 cell/nun. As control, some larvae reared only in water contaminated with V. Harveyi without sponge. Investigation conducted till all of the larvae control dead. After that, the density of the bacteria and organic suspended material were measured. The test result showed that sponges able to reduced the density of the bacteria and organic suspended material up to 87,3 % and 76,3 %, respectively. The existence of the sponges also proved increase the survival rate of the larvae up to 83,3 %.
